To become a nurse in Scotland, you must complete a Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) approved nursing programme of education.
Here’s a summary of the different routes future nurse pathways poster.
There are 12 universities in Scotland offering NMC approved nursing degree programmes. To find a specific programme use the search function on My World of work.
- Entry requirements
These vary but you are likely to need 3 SQA Highers at grade C or SCQF Level 6 equivalent plus supporting National 5 Qualifications in English and Maths or SCQF Level 5 equivalent. - Course duration
Most programs take a minimum of three years and up to four years depending on the degree you choose. - Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL)
If you have previous relevant experience or qualifications, your university may consider this through APL. Check with your chosen university for more details.
The Open University offers a part-time nursing degree that allows you to remain employed in a support worker role while studying. This four-year programme includes online learning and local placements.
Entry Requirements
SCQF Level 5 in numeracy and literacy or completion of the Open University 'Access to Nursing' programme (no formal qualifications required).
This route is for adult learners who have been out of education for three or more years. It helps bridge gaps in your education and leads to a university nursing degree.

One year, followed by entry into a SWAP-partnered university nursing programme
This route is ideal for existing healthcare support workers or those without the necessary qualifications for direct entry into a nursing degree.

2 SQA Highers or SCQF Level 6 equivalent. - Pathway
After completing the Higher National Certificate (HNC), successful learners can enter the first year of a nursing degree programme or, if they meet specific criteria, the second year.
For those with an undergraduate degree in any subject, this route offers a 3-year nursing program.

To work as a nurse in Scotland you must be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
This route is for qualified nurses who wish to return to practice. The NMC has specific requirements for this process. For more information visit the Nursing and Midwifery Council website.
Please note: The Return to Practice route is for individuals who have previously held NMC registration in the UK. If you studied nursing outside the UK and have never held NMC registration, you will need to follow the process outlined by the NMC for internationally trained nurses.
