Welcome to the Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professions (NMAHP) Development Framework. It is designed to help you maximize your potential and impact at every level of practice.
In this section you will find a brief introduction and overview of the Development Framework. By selecting the subheadings, you can access further information like how the framework is structured, how to use the framework, user stories and help topics.
Who is the Framework for?
It is intended for all NMAHP staff which includes Healthcare Support Workers (HCSWs), Nurses, Midwives, Allied Health Professions (AHPs) and health care students in Scotland.
Examples of how different groups of staff use the framework can be found in the User Stories section.
The framework can be used to support your own professional development and practice, but mangers and educators can also use it to help and support you in your role.

What are the benefits of using the Framework?
It offers a structure with key knowledge, skills and behaviours to inform career, learning and workforce development for all NMAHPs.
Healthcare professional
It can help you to benchmark your knowledge and skills and support your professional development across your career.
Manager
You can use the Framework to:
- support discussions that take place as part of the personal development planning and review process
- inform succession planning
- support skills maximisation within your team
- support service redesign and skill mix
- map professional development of new employees joining from another area / board / previous employment.
Educator
You can use the Framework to:
- plan and deliver education and training to meet the rapidly changing needs of the NMAHP workforce
- identify opportunities for shared, inter-professional learning, and describe how education programmes articulate with each other.
