Help topics and FAQs

In this section you will find some Help Topics and Frequently Asked Questions to help you find out more about how the NMAHP Development Framework can be used in practice.

You can find a list of terms and acronyms here.

The Development Needs Analysis Tool (DNAT) is a self-assessment tool that enables you to use the framework to reflect on your job role and identify areas where you might benefit from further development.

The DNAT uses the Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours (KSBs) statements from the framework which are arranged under the 4 Pillars of Practice to assess your level of practice. A RAG rating scale is used to help you to assess and rate your current knowledge and skills.

There is a DNAT for each level of the framework.

You can individualise the DNAT by adding additional role/profession specific KSBs from other competency frameworks relevant to your role. There is a blank template for this purpose.

Once completed the DNAT it can be used to support reflective discussions and professional development planning with your manager. If you are working at advanced level the DNAT can also be used to support evidence of competence and sign off locally.

The professional portfolios can be used to record evidence of learning from current or previous experience gained in the workplace and through life experience, to support access to courses and career progression.  It is available to all NMAHP staff who wish to use an electronic portfolio to record evidence of their learning.

The professional portfolios can support reflective practice and staff can use the share pack function.

The professional portfolios are a great way to record discussions based off the NMAHP and HCSW Development Framework and also to save a copy of the completed DNAT which can be used to support professional development planning.

You can find out more about the professional portfolios by following the links below.

TURAS appraisal is the application designed to allow practitioners to record evidence of achievements and future organisational objectives relating to their role.

Managers can support staff to use the NMAHP Development Framework to assess/reflect on their current practice and development needs, which can lead to a much more robust appraisal process.

Staff should be more engaged in this process as they will be able to measure their progress throughout the year.

Delegation using the NMAHP Development Framework can help to define the scope of practice for all NMAHP staff within a team and make sure that safe and appropriate delegation takes place. Regulators, for example the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) or the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) provide guidance and standards relating to delegation which should be adhered to when considering staff development.

There is a Framework Reflective Self-assessment tool available that contains guidance on reflection.

This reflective tool is an alternative to the development needs analysis tool (DNAT) designed to help you reflect on your current job role and to identify areas where you may benefit from further training, education and development to enhance or develop in your current role. Download the

A good way to support your team with engaging with the Framework is to share some examples of how you are using it with them. A team meeting might be a good opportunity to discuss it and see what support people feel they might need to use it.  You could also share examples from the User Stories section.

There is a range of help and guidance within the Framework itself. Go to the Getting Started section.

Another good place to go for inspiration is the User Stories section where you can see how other teams and individuals use the framework.

In every Health Board in Scotland there are Practice Educators that can support you and your team with implementing the framework. This may be a bespoke training session or training sessions that are available to all staff. To find out who your contact is follow this link.

The User Stories section has lots of information about how others are using the framework.

If you would like to share your experiences of using the Framework, please contact us via our mailbox: postreg.nmahp@nes.scot.nhs.uk

The NMAHP Development Framework has numerous examples of knowledge and skills that address the core dimensions of the NHS Knowledge and Skill Framework (KSF). The NHS KSF is for all staff on agenda for change terms and conditions. Therefore, knowledge and skills gained using the NMAHP Development Framework can be applied to the KSF.

If you go to the Supporting Frameworks section, we have put together a list of key frameworks and detailed how they can be used in conjunction with the framework to reduce duplication where possible.
